Matt, Uncle Tim, and Little ol’ Me!

20130812-194537.jpg

Hi, friends!

My brother, Matt, has been in the hospital again. Over a week so far this time. It turns out the duct (I think that’s what it’s called) between his gallbladder and pancreas is much smaller than its supposed to be, so they took care of that. But then that caused the pancreatitis to worsen, which isn’t unusual..but not what his body needed! The lipase count skyrocketed back up to 2400, and the pain was no good!

So..then they decided after a few days that it was time to remove the gallbladder and hope it would help/remedy the problem. That brings us to yesterday, surgery day! They removed the gallbladder, he made it through surgery fine, and as always, had a good attitude/outlook.

I checked in with him earlier today to see how he was feeling and he said he was doing great! He said the lipase count was down to 399! What?! 399?!? Wow!!! I don’t think it’s been that low since this whole thing hit his system back in May. Of course the goal is to still get it down much lower. But 399 was AWESOME NEWS!!! He says the pain is less now. Of course, he has the pain from the gallbladder removal surgery, but I’m sure that’s a cakewalk compared to the other pain he’s had. He will try food in a few days.

I’m not sure when he will get to leave the hospital, but his wife and son are sure ready for him to be HOME. So lets pray he keeps improving and gets to go home very soon.

I am so excited to be able to give you all, my fellow prayer warriors, this wonderful update! Thanks very much for continuing to pray for him, I appreciate you all more than I could ever express.

Another update..this time on me and my “dirty mouth”! (Anyone else think of the Orbit commercial when I said that? Haha) Im doing sooo well! I think I told you I’ve slipped a few times, but the improvement is awesome. I don’t even think swear words anymore! When I see them at random times online, my spirit cringes a bit. So thank you for your prayers on that.

They were able to transfer Uncle Tim back to a Portland hospital, but last we heard he was still in a coma. The update today said that today was “the big day” for him and to be thinking of/praying for him..but none of us knew what that meant. We hope to get a real update soon.

Whatever you’re dealing with today, whether spiritual, physical, or otherwise, know that my prayers are with you. Keep praising Him in advance – it may not come today, it may not even come next week – but, believe me, breakthrough is on the way, friends!

Blessings to you and yours,

Sarah

But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don’t get tired, they walk and don’t lag behind. -Isaiah 40:31

**8/13/13 UPDATE: Matt’s lipase count was finally in “normal range” today at 150!! He is getting ready to *drum roll please* EAT! Lets pray his body likes the food. 🙂

That’s Not a Lemon, That’s Lemonade in Waiting!

When you look at things..do you see them as they are? Or do you look past the surface, and see them as they could be? As they will be if effort is applied? Is it a sour, bitter lemon? Or is it the key ingredient to an ice cold, refreshing summer drink?

I have an update on Matt for you. He went in for an MRI last week and the results were good. There’s no cancer or anything, but there are a few cysts on his pancreas. Apparently that’s not unusual? Interesting! Anyway, so that was good to hear. They’re now passing him onto another specialist. Mom said a doc gave him a list of foods he can try eating..foods..not liquids…FOODS! Progress!

Im not going to try and pass a lie off to you and say that it’s not been extremely frustrating for me to stay positive at times. It has. I will find myself slipping into anger over the doctors, and have to then remind myself..they are doctors, not THE Doctor. They are not Matt’s healer, He is. And so, I choose to continue to praise Him in advance for complete restoration of every cell in Matt’s body.

But it is a very conscious choice, friends.

If I don’t choose to praise, I won’t.

If I don’t choose to be hopeful, I’m not.

Because with human eyes, this experience is just too hard on a sister’s heart. I must constantly choose to look with spirit eyes. I must choose to see things through the veil of faith. I must choose see things not as they are, but as they will be.

“..So the promise is good in the sight of God, in whom Abraham believed—the God who brings the dead to life and whose command brings into being what did not exist.” Romans 4:17b

In what area(s) of your life are you having to apply this scripture?

Let me encourage you to embrace the reality that He’s still on the throne, still working miracles, still answering prayers, and He still has His eyes firmly planted on you. He loves you, He’s working all things for your good, He knows your struggle, and He is not about to leave you alone. Look up, friends!

Thanks so much for all of the encouraging comments, texts, emails, prayers, smiles, and hugs. You all encourage me so much! I know that in relation to other things going on in the world, this struggle is small. But, I thank my God that my struggles are important to Him, no matter the size. He has time for me. He has time for you, too. Call on Him today.

“Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.”
– 1 Peter 5:7

Is It Really Ok To Love Myself?

20130422-220836.jpg

I love this devo. I find so many times that people, myself included, like to climb the martyr cross and deny ourselves for the sake of others. Yes, we are to love others, etc. But if we don’t take care of ourselves, we can’t hope to take care of anyone else. So, today, stop and take some time for yourself! I can assure you, the world will not stop spinning if you take an hour to just be alone and do something to “fill your tank”. Enjoy the break! Then you will be filled up and ready to give to others again. Even Jesus rested, and took time away. Certainly it’s ok if you do the same. 🙂

Love and blessings,

Sarah

Taking Care Of Yourself

“Building up yourselves.” Jude 1:20

Listen: “A woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head…but when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying ‘Why this waste?’…When Jesus was aware of it, He said …’She has done a good work'” (Mt 26:7-10 NKJV).

Try to learn from Jesus! Allow the oil of service you pour on others to be poured on you, otherwise you’ll burn out. This isn’t a license for self-indulgence but rather a call to do what needs to be done to restore our depleted energy and exhausted spirit. You’ll never reach your highest potential if you don’t.

Furthermore, people usually treat you like you treat yourself. So start treating yourself better! It’s good to serve others, but too many of us are hiding behind serving others to avoid having to serve ourselves, or because we don’t know how.

How can you fulfill the command to “love your neighbor as yourself”, if you haven’t a clue how to love and take care of yourself? Too many of us become secretly resentful of the endless responsibilities and needs dumped on us each day, while seemingly no-one takes time to give back. Ultimately you have to make deposits where the world you live in seems to make endless withdrawals, or else face insufficient funds. Pretty soon those checks are bouncing everywhere: morally, emotionally, sexually and spiritually. Who’ll give back to you if not you? So, the word for you today is: “Allow the oil you pour on others, to be poured on you!”

Forgiveness Brings Freedom

A Place of Forgiveness
By Suzie Eller

” … Keep your eyes open to this Temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My name will be honored there,’ and listen to the prayers that I pray at this place. Listen from your home in heaven and when you hear, forgive.” 1 Kings 8:28-30 (MSG)

Claire sat on the floor with a wad of tissues in her hand. Her husband had left her three days earlier for someone else.

Sitting there crying, in her brokenness she sensed God whisper, “Pray for him.”

Fists clinched, she shook them at the ceiling. “It’s too soon, God. If You love me, You won’t ask this of me. You are focusing on the wrong person. He’s the one who should be kneeling and asking for forgiveness.”

In 1 Kings 8, we find the story of God’s temple being built, a temple where God’s presence would dwell. It took seven years, a labor force of over 130,000 and King Solomon’s leadership to complete the temple. It was built with cypress, olive wood and cedar, and inside the doors were overlaid in gold. When the temple was completed, Solomon stood in awe as God’s presence filled it (verse 10), and he began to pray.

He could have asked God for many things. That the temple be a place of power where his kingdom would shine. That his enemies, and those of his father, King David, would be slain. That the sinful man would walk through the doors and be condemned for his sins.

Instead he asked that God’s Name be honored in the temple, and the magnificent structure would be a place of forgiveness.

Scripture declares that we are His temple. Three days after discovering her husband’s secrets Claire hadn’t eaten. She hadn’t slept. Her temple was crumbling.

By asking her to forgive so soon, God wasn’t showing a lack of compassion over her pain or her husband’s abandonment, but a sign that He knew her well. By asking her to forgive, God was asking for a place to move into the demolished areas of her life.

Forgiving would allow Him to fill her with His presence, putting His Name there forever, no matter what her situation.

Daily, Claire walked intentionally in her relationship with God, reading the Bible, talking honestly with Him, listening to worship music. This became her sanctuary as she went through the most challenging parts of an unwanted divorce. The more she nurtured her heart and His presence inside of her, the less room there was for sadness, grief, anger, and loss.

And then the day came. She knelt on the carpet and she told God, “I forgive him,” and she meant it.

A deeper meaning to the word forgive is “to abide” or “to set free.” Claire experienced both of these as she made room within her heart, mind and soul for God’s presence and forgiveness to dwell.

It’s been nearly a year. She is still beginning each day with God and inviting Him to fill her up with Himself. Moments of joy now surprise her just as grief once did.

Dear Lord, I knew instinctively that one day You would ask me to forgive, but today I understand why. You want to move in to the demolished areas of my life and let Your presence shine. Help me to begin to forgive with Your help. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Letting Go Of Archie Bunker

20130325-091416.jpg

God can do anything with a willing heart. Are you willing to allow Him to work in your life, and change you from the inside out? Or would you rather stay the way you are today, forfeiting growth?

Archie Bunker, for those of you who never saw All in the Family, was a cranky, stubborn (among many other despicable things) man who was set in his ways, unwilling to change. No matter how much we disliked Archie, we can’t in good conscience say that we haven’t shared his stubbornness at times. Maybe not in the same areas, but stubborn none the less.

In my life, there have been times where I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my sin and I would have loved to live in that sin forever. But, there came a point where I had to choose..what do I love more? My own fleshly desires, or The Lord and His will for my life? In realizing that His plan for me is so much better than the life I had planned, I was able to surrender fully to the change I knew needed to take place.

He takes the ashes of our lives, and gives us beauty in return. The joy I thought I had found when I was choosing sin over Him is so completely dim compared to the joy I now have living in His will. Everyday, I have to choose (in some capacity), will I be willing to let Him change me even more today, or will I choose to stunt my growth by staying set in MY ways.

Just like we talked awhile back how bitterness is a form of pride, so is stubbornness (or being unwilling to change). When we are not willing to let go of our stuff, we are telling God, “My way is better than Yours. I am my God now.”

Let’s stop trying to be someone we aren’t. Let’s surrender to being His sheep, instead of continuing the doomed pursuit of taking the Shepherd’s job. Surrender today, be willing to allow Him to work in and through you. You will never be sorry that you did.

Willingness = Surrender

We’ll chat more tomorrow,

Sarah

Today’s prayer devo selection:

Prayer for Willingness

I AM willing to change!

I AM willing to change my mind!

I AM willing to change my heart!

I AM willing to change the perception
of myself and the world around me!

I AM willing to change what I do and
how I do it!

I AM willing to know change, to be changed and see the miraculous change that change
brings!

I know that I of myself can do nothing,
therefore, I AM willing to allow the Holy
Spirit to heal and change me at the soul
level, that I may be all that God created me to be.

I AM willing to be transformed!

. . . to have my true mind restored,

. . . to have my heart renewed,

. . . according to God’s perfect plan.
