Would You Drop Everything?

IMG_2521.PNG

My son and I were nearly killed this morning in traffic. Our lives were spared at the last moment when I felt something physically take my hand on the steering wheel and jerk us quickly to safety in the lane next to us. It was divine intervention. I had my own plans (braking and honking). The Lord had different plans. He saw what I couldn’t see with my own eyes. He saw our lives were in jeopardy and intervened. Some may say, “No, Sarah, those were your reflexes.” I can assure you, there were no reflexes involved. I encounter these situations daily, I wasn’t phased by what was happening (someone running a light and turning in front of me). I was calm and doing what I normally do. It was the Lord who moved us.

I’ve been contemplating the situation all day (as well as a few other situations). Why were we spared? People die everyday. No one person more deserving than the next. What was the Lord trying to show me? I could’ve lost my son. My son could’ve lost me. Our family could’ve lost both of us.

I figured I wasn’t spared so I could sit on the couch and watch tv. ;0) So I decided to get up and get my cleaning done.

While cleaning the bathrooms, I was praying. Who doesn’t! Wait is it just me who does that? :0) Anyway, I wasn’t praying anything in particular, not an organized prayer by any means, no words. More just an open heart to the Holy Spirit..letting Him flow into my heart, soul and mind without barriers. That’s my favorite kind of “prayer”. More of an invitation for His input, I suppose.

I heard Him say these words to my spirit, “If you had to lose everyone and everything dear to you in order to follow Me, would you?”

My first thought was instinctively, “Yes, Lord.”

Then I saw snippets of everyone I love in my life, every thing I have that I hold dear. Every sunny day. Every healthy breath. My family. My best friends. My car. My home. My bed. My dogs. My mind. My abilities.

Again, I hear, “If you had to lose everyone and everything dear to you in order to follow Me, would you?”

Again, with a lump in my throat, “Yes, Father. Even if I have to lose everything, I choose You.”

I ache to my core to think of losing people in order to follow Christ and His will. But if it means He is pleased in me, if it means I get to spend eternity with Him, I will. He is my first love.

I want to encourage you to stay on the path. To keep Him first, even when it hurts. Even when your flesh cries out in anguish and you can’t understand why His way is best. One day it will all make perfect sense, but it doesn’t have to make sense now. We have to be like Simon and Andrew. We need to drop everything, and follow.

When we are standing face to face with the Almighty God, it will all make perfect sense.

I think we were spared today because I needed a reminder that everything here on earth fades, it can be gone in an instant, but He remains.

He’s asking for us to go deeper. To let go of the things we have a death grip on, and refocus our attention on Him. It’s not our agenda that matters, it’s His. We need to make His agenda our agenda.

Well, I sure Didn’t Expect That!

20130712-092115.jpg

How do you react when the unexpected hits? I’m not talking about finding a million dollars unexpectedly. I’m talking about finding out you have cancer. Finding out you or your spouse have lost their job. Finding out your power bill tripled, but is still due in full on the 1st. Finding out your child won’t advance to the next grade in school. Finding out your friend is cheating on their spouse..with your spouse. Going to start your car in the morning on the way to a job interview, and it’s dead. Finding out your child used the internet on their cell phone 24/7 in the last billing period and went over the data allotment by a landslide, leaving you with an outrageous bill to pay.

What do you do?

Do you call everyone you know? Do you post it on Facebook or Twitter immediately? Do scream and throw a fit? Do you punch a wall?

Or do you stop dead in your tracks, look up, and say, “Lord, help me.”

“Lord, I know You have a plan to turn even this for good.”

“Daddy, I’m in big trouble. I’m scared. I’m feeling very alone. But I know You’re here, and that You won’t leave Me. I believe You will make a way where there seems to be no way. I know that with You by my side, all of my battles are already won. And so, I will leave this situation at your feet, and continue to strive for the upcoming victory.”

It’s easy, when the unexpected slaps you upside the head, to deal with it in the flesh. I know, I’ve done it frequently!

But, does dealing with it in the flesh solve anything?

Does complaining to your friends, and posting sympathy inducing status updates on your social media feeds help anything? Is the problem solved now? Do you have peace now? I’m thinking not. Why?

Because you can’t find peace when you’re constantly focusing on, and elevating, the problem. Peace doesn’t exist in the flesh, it exists in the spirit.

Peace comes when we give our cares to Him. (Matthew 6:25-34)

So today, make a conscious decision: When the unexpected hits, I will look UP instead of out/down. I will call on His mighty name, instead of screaming my woes to the masses.

Let me say, also, there’s nothing wrong with sending out a request for prayer to friends. I’m not saying there is. But notice the difference in the two following prayers requests..

1. “PLEASE PRAY FOR ME! Stephen found out today (on payday no less!!) that he’s lost his job, then the vet called saying that the dog needs surgery and it “can’t wait”, the car is on “E”, so now I have to WALK to pick up my kids from school (how embarrassing is that?!), because the bank account is empty and I can’t fill the car up..AND, here’s the kicker, I have no food in the cupboards!! I don’t know what we are going to do. I don’t know why God is doing this, we’ve been faithful tithers, we are good people, we help others! I thought He wasn’t supposed to give us anything more than we could handle! Well, HELLO, I CAN’T HANDLE THIS!! Life sucks.”

2. “Friends and family, I’m writing to ask that you please keep our family in your prayers. We are fighting towards victory in a few situations, and would appreciate the “back up” of your prayers. Thanks so much! We look forward to sharing the praise report with you! As always, we will continue to lift you up in prayer as well. God is GOOD – ALL the time!”

Notice the difference? One screams of panic and drama. The other speaks softly, but directly, with power and belief for a better day to come. One says my God isn’t big enough. The other says my God is good, and my victory draweth nigh!”

One says, I choose to worship Satan in this affliction. The other says, I choose to worship my Savior God in this situation.

Choose wisely today, my friends! He loves you dearly. Give Him center stage. He deserves it. And He won’t disappoint. Life gets hard, just as He promised it would. But your story doesn’t end here. These earthly troubles will pass away. Your destiny involves dancing on streets of gold!

You are blessed! Focus on the victory, not the trial. In doing that, you give God the glory! My love to all of you as we continue on this journey to growth together! It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it!

Die, Flesh, Die!

20130520-121941.jpg

Are we willing to walk the walk, or are we satisfied just talking the talk?

I’m currently in a situation (an email war of sorts) where my “flesh man” wants to take over. I have to constantly (and I do mean CONSTANTLY) choose whether or not I will allow the “flesh man” to choose my words for me, or if I will let my “Spirit man” speak.

I find myself writing sentences that make my flesh feel good (REAL GOOD! In a “Take THAT!” Sort of way.). But they make my spirit hurt. As a result, the backspace button gets it’s workout! Delete, delete, delete!

It’s not always easy to submit to the “Spirit man”. But, when we do, we find peace. A fleshly response/action may feel good on a pride level, but a spiritual response will feel good on a much deeper level, if we allow it.

Where the enemy (flesh) brings temporary satisfaction, The Lord (Spirit) brings lasting fulfillment.

Lets put on our Spirit shoes today, and leave the Flesh shoes to rot.

Blessings,

Sarah

Empty Shoes
By: Patricia Day

In church yesterday, a little boy fidgeted in his seat. He wanted to move to another place rather than sit quietly in his seat. As minutes ticked by he gave up his efforts and resolved instead to remove his shoes. I suppose he thought if he couldn’t walk then why keep them on?

So off the shoes came and he curled up in his chair eyeing all who were around him instead. The shoes sat empty on the floor – he had no use for them if he couldn’t get down and move around. He chose to give up – which in this instance was probably a good thing; he could have been distracting as he did things his way.

Jesus longs for us to follow Him in all His ways. He asks us to walk in His shoes! He wants us to walk His way because it will lead us to a better place and yet, so many of us choose not to. We want to walk on our own chosen path in life, whether it is comfortable or not! We won’t persevere in doing things His way because we feel it would be too hard for us. We prefer to remain in our unfulfilling lives, in other words we give up!

The shoes that Jesus gives us are always a good fit, the trouble is we won’t know it unless we try them on and walk in them. Just as the little lad discarded his shoes because he no longer felt a need for them, we do the same to Jesus as we decide to go it alone and do things our way.

Proverbs 10:9 He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known. (NKJV)

Prayer: Abba, we don’t want to remain empty and unused. We want our lives to be meaningful and worthwhile. We choose to follow You and we choose Jesus to lead us to the path designated for us alone. In His mighty Name, Amen!
